Baker’s Magic is a masterfully crafted book by Diane Zahler about adventure, defying stereotypes, and family, all with the added touch of a little magic. When I first picked up Baker’s Magic at the library, I did what every book fan shouldn’t do and I judged the book by it’s cover. I almost put it back on the shelf, but I decided I’d give it a chance if I had extra time. That was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my lifetime of reading. Baker’s Magic follows Bee, a young orphan girl trying to find her place in the world. When she’s caught stealing from a bakery, the baker takes her under his wing. Together, they discover that Bee has the unique ability to bake feelings into her creations. Along her way, she meets Anika, the princess of the kingdom who also happens to be an orphan. When Bee discovers the wizard of the kingdom has a plan to marry Anika off to an old, wrinkly, mean spirited king, she and the princess, along with their new friend Will, set off to find the League of Mages to stop the wizard. When they set out however, Bee and Anika realize their families might not be as lost as they believe. This book is filled with magic, adventure, and family as well as four strong role models, three of which are female. This book is a must read for people ages 10-13.
