When Tony's Uncle Charlie dies, Tony is sent to the mysterious Penda Academy. At this school, everything seems normal...at first, but when Tony thinks he sees a ghost and everything spirals out of control. With the help of his newfound friends, he prepares to protect himself from the ghost in a final showdown on Halloween. Still, everything doesn't seem right. Why was his new friend Jessica at the school so early on the weekend? Why did he keep seeing the ghost of the founder's son? And who kept leaving him secret messages? Avi's book is filled with twists and turns, ghosts and frights, and a mysterious past that's just waiting to be uncovered. This book was pretty predictable up until the last 30 pages or so, when the author tries to throw four different twists at you. Two of them I saw coming, but the other two caught me by complete surprise! The best part of this book is the tone and feeling it gives the readers. It has a mysterious and creepy feeling to it that really rounds out the book! Some of the themes presented in the book might be a little unsettling, like death, or an "other side," but overall, I think this book is a really fun read, and it's perfect for ages 10-13.
