The Secret Keepers Book Review

Fans of The Mysterious Benedict Society will love The Secret Keepers, Trenton Lee Stewart’s latest children’s book. It tells the story of Reuben, a boy living in the run-down metropolis of New Umbra, which is controlled by an elusive villain called The Smoke. When Reuben finds an antique watch, he becomes determined to discover its secret. However, when the watch gives him a superpower he never could have imagined, he begins to get in over his head. He meets powerful people who will stop at nothing to acquire the watch, along with the family of one of its past owners, the Meyer’s, who are exceptionally kind to him. However, he is presented with an incredible opportunity - one that would require him to betray the Meyer’s. Though it may not be quite as brilliant as the Mysterious Benedict Society, The Secret Keepers is extremely suspenseful, and thoroughly enjoyable. Almost every character is astonishingly relatable, and the backstory of the watch is impressively detailed and entertaining. The Secret Keepers is appropriate for ages 8-12.
